Description

The ever-changing coastal conditions and the need for safe passage into Nantucket’s protected waters have made this lighthouse an essential landmark

Rosslare (Wexford)

1998—one of only eleven lighthouses in the country to receive this honor

The island gets its name for its relative length (5km) to its width (under 1 km)

The original light

Balbriggan dutch The ever-changing coastal conditions andBalbriggan is renowned for its lighthouse, which is the second oldest active one in Ireland only Hook Head beats it. In 1762, Baron George Hamilton commissioned a limestone pier and in 1769, the lighthouse was added. In 1860, Rockabill lighthouse was established, transforming Balbriggan from a sea light to a minor harbour light. The removal of the glass and brass dome of the lighthouse has caused consternation to the local population for many a year.
